A consistent theme of these articles has been the nomination of authors who have crossed genres and produced work in different spheres. This month’s nominee has achieved success as a novelist, television and film screenwriter, playwright, children’s author and adult author, specialising in mystery and suspense.
The early literary career of Horowitz focused on children and young adult readers. His “Alex Rider” series [featuring a 14 year old British boy who spies for MI6], “The Power of Five “series [introducing devils and witches], and “The Diamond Brothers” series were hugely successful and established his name as a genuine purveyor of suspense stories.
Horowitz’s adult works include two Sherlock Holmes novels commissioned by the Estate of Arthur Conan Doyle [“The House of Silk” and “Moriarty”], three novels with detectives Atticus Pund and Susan Ryeland [“Magpie Murders”, “Moonflower Murders” and “Marble Hall Murders”] and five novels based on himself as a companion to a private investigator. In addition, the Estate of lan Fleming commissioned Horowitz to write three James Bond novels, “Trigger Mortis”,” Forever and a Day“ and “With a Mind to Kill”.
Horowitz began writing for television in the 1980s, contributing to several children’s television programs. He adapted several Hercule Poirot stories for ITV’s “Agatha Christie’s Poirot” in the 1 990s. In 2002, Horowitz created, wrote and directed the acclaimed “Foyle’s War” series. This is a historically themed detective series set during and after World War 2. Twenty – eight episodes were produced between 2002 and 2015. These were highly praised due to the authenticity of the settings and superb acting.
The film screenplay career of Horowitz began in 1989 with a film adaption of “Just Ask for Diamond”. This was followed up by the feature film screenplay “The Gathering” released in 2003, starring Christina Ricci. He also wrote the screenplay for the first Alex Rider major motion picture, “Stormbreaker
In October 2008, Horowitz’s play “Mindgame” opened off Broadway at the Soho Playhouse in New York.
